FABLEMAKER AND FRIENDS PRESENTS: JOHN-LUKE ROBERTS

A new semi-regular night where we showcase our resident host Ben Van der Velde's awesome crowdwork and storytelling skills, as well as featuring festival shows from some of our favourite comics on the circuit.  Coming up in this first special show:

BEN VAN DER VELDE - FABLEMAKER

An improvised comedy adventure with this "master of audience interaction" (Huffington Post) as he raids the library of his fantastical imagination to create thrillers, romances, ghost stories and more original freewheeling tales that've never been told before and never will be again.

"Sharp and crafty gagsmith, a life-giving compere." Chortle

“Highly promising…an accomplished comic."  Time Out

"Wonderfully improvised riffs showcasing his impressive spontaneity and sharp tongue." Edinburgh Festivals Magazine

“On flights of fancy, he pushes ideas to extremes and displays a crackling, spontaneous energy in which we’re swept up.” Fest

JOHN-LUKE ROBERTS: AFTER ME COMES THE FLOOD (BUT IN FRENCH) DRIP SPLOSH SPLASH DRIP BLUBBP BLUBBP BLUBBPBLUBBPBLUBBP!!

Blam blam! The critically acclaimed idiot returns with a brand-new hour of extraordinary daft-hearted comedy, following a complete sell out at this year's Fringe.

has the sort of towering intellect that made him President of the prestigious Cambridge Footlights and a hotshot writer for The News Quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You.  He is also, as you can see from this photo, someone who enjoys the warm embrace of the British tradition of eccentricity.  He has worked extensively with Tony Law, created the legendary Alternative Comedy Memorial Society and helms a new, daft project in which comedians try to adapt and perform unadaptable texts (like the iTunes Terms and Conditions and all of Proust's work) in under an hour.

So whether you like finely crafted Radio 4 teatime jokes or batshit crazy stuff on his theories about the intersection between Roman history and all 26 of the Spice Girls, there's something for everyone here.

“Freewheeling escapism... a joy.” ***** Fest

“A hit.” **** The Times

“Killer gags... glorious idiocy.” **** Guardian

“Mind-warping.  Brilliantly follows through on his own absurd logic…relentlessly funny.” List

“Alternative comedy close to its pinnacle.” Chortle

GARRETT MILLERICK

GARRETT MILLERICK

Over the past few years Garrett has emerged as a brilliantly enraged voice of frustrated reason, a masterful storyteller and a firm favourite at the Fringe and in comedy clubs all over the UK.  A bombastic stage presence married to a masterful turn of phrase has seen him branded Critic's Choice in The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The iPaper, The Metro and Time Out.  Last year's 'Sunflower' was an enormous hit in Edinburgh, leading to a nomination for Best Breakthrough Act at the Chortle Awards.  He followed it up this August with 'Smile'.  Don't think the name means that he has mellowed - he's still full of passion, fury and the ability to provoke enormous laughs on subjects ranging from Dragon's Den to eco-anxiety and even a bit of (common sense) soul-searching.

If you want a comic fueled by truly hilarious rage, then Garrett is the man for you.

"A big hitting stand-up." Guardian

"Watching him let rip is a unique joy." The List

"A virtuoso display of unforgivingly grumpy stand-up delivered with fire in his soul." Chortle

ANDREW O'NEILL

ANDREW O'NEILL

Andrew is one of the most varied and genuinely alternative acts on the circuit. He’s a metalhead, an amateur occultist and a musician. He’s been a returning guest on ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ and appeared in ‘Saxondale’ with Steve Coogan. You’ll also have heard him all over your wireless, including offering objects for display at John Lloyd’s ‘Museum of Curiosity’ on Radio 4, as well as on BBC Radio 1, Radio 4 Extra, and 5live. But live is where the hidden mind-control signals planted in his work are most effective.

He’s a bit of a regular on the comedy stages at Download, Sonisphere, Bloodstock, Leeds and Reading festivals and has opened for Amanda Palmer off of the Dresden Dolls, done audience warm-up for Never Mind the Buzzcocks, hosted the Metal Hammer Golden Gods, played at Torture Garden and the Bizarre Magazine Ball and load of other events where people mainly wear shiny things.

He is a founder member of the Victorian-obsessed punk band The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, whose distinctive anarcho-punk gained a cult following and besmirched the stages of music festivals worldwide.

“An increasingly distinctive, imaginative act… brilliant, genuinely unexpected lines are added to the mix. At this rate, it won’t be long until he’s huge.” Chortle

ANGELOUS EPITHEMIOU & ERICH MCELROY

EDINBURGH PREVIEW SPECIAL

ANGELOS EPITHEMIOU - CAN I JUST SHOW YOU WHAT I'VE GOT

Angelos is up in Edinburgh to do his stuff and to stand in front of people for about 13 days, maybe more if he can get time off at the stables. Come and see him talk and prepare his speech for the UN.

The creation of Dan Renton Skinner – a member of the Dutch Elm Conservatoire Sketch group – Angelos Epithemiou is the owner of a burger van who wants to break into show business.  He got his break in 2009, when he became a permanent team member on the revival of Shooting Stars, replacing Johnny Vegas on Ulrika Jonsson’s Team B, before becoming the scorer.

"Plenty to relish here." Evening Standard

ERICH MCELROY - RADICAL CENTRIST

With politics moving to extremes and into every aspect of our lives, Erich McElroy finds another way. The only true centrist comedian at the Fringe, Erich is rising up to demand incremental change and reasoned debate. He’s crossing over the left/right divide in a way that’ll make you stop – or at least slow down. Heard on BBC's Breaking the News, Radio 4’s Moral Maze and seen on BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain, and Sky News.

"Hilariously insightful." The List

"Brilliant observations." Chortle

"A box worth ticking." Metro

ROB KEMP & DAISY EARL

EDINBURGH PREVIEW SPECIAL!

ROB KEMP - MOONRAKER 2: MOONRAKERER

The closest I get to remembering my dreams are the ideas that occur during the thin veil between sleep and awake, where your mind wanders unimpeded and undirected. This is a collection of those ideas. Some will be funny. Some won't make sense. There will be some stuff on Belgian Surrealist René Magritte and a song full of penis synonyms about the Icelandic Phallological Society. Rob Kemp is the multiple award-winning, Edinburgh Fringe Best Newcomer-nominated creator of The Elvis Dead. This is not that. This is a new thing.

"Twisted genius." Sunday Times

"An instant Fringe cult classic." The List

"The archetypal outsider hit: unlikely, made on a shoestring with love, and weirdly inspired." Guardian

DAISY EARL - FAIRY ELEPHANT

Hotly anticipated debut from promising newcomer. Winner of Scottish Comedian of the Year and Chortle's Best Newcomer. Daisy woke up on her 30th Birthday deeply dissatisfied. Why isn't she thinner, more successful, and blonde? And why does that cow on Instagram have it all? This year is going to be different; get sober, stop crying in public and for god's sake get a boyfriend! This is one woman's attempt to change everything about herself:

"Impressive. Vulnerability but awakening steeliness." Scotsman

"Equal parts deprecation and defiant attitude. Hilarious." Chortle

IMRAN YUSUF

Imran Yusuf is renowned as a skilful raconteur who seamlessly weaves socio-political satire with heartfelt introspection in his charmingly endearing trademark styling. Languid, punchy, cheeky and utterly loveable, Imran has established himself as a truly unique voice in the world of comedy.

Imran is of East-African Indian descent, born in Mombasa, Kenya but raised in London with a brief stint studying illegally in the USA. Imran has travelled much of the world including Israel/Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia during the Lebanon Crisis in 2006 in an all-encompassing pilgrimage for which he quit his job and spent his savings.

In 2010, he presented his debut solo show at the Edinburgh Festival.  The show, “An Audience with Imran Yusuf”, was part of the Laughing Horse Free Festival and it was Imran’s intention to develop his craft and material at the Fringe whilst at the same time keeping under the radar of the UK Comedy Industry and Press. However, word about the show got out and within a week Imran had gained the first of a collection of 5 star reviews, which led to him being nominated for Best Newcomer in the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award 2010 (He was the first performer from The Free Festival to be nominated in the history of the Awards). All of this whilst fasting between sunrise and sunset in observation of Ramadan.

Since then Imran has appeared on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, completed several UK tours and been instrumental in the success of the first ever “HaLOL” comedy night to celebrate the growing talent of British Muslim comedy in the UK.

"Intelligent, thought-provoking and laugh out loud funny.” Time Out

SINDHU VEE

SINDHU VEE

Sindhu Vee is most likely the tallest Indian woman you’ll ever meet. The daughter of Indian parents, a London-based mother, and bearer of half a PhD, it is rumoured but unverified, that Sindhu practised the dark arts of investment banking before making her parents proud by becoming a stand-up. She devotes all the time she has left over from raising her 3 children (and a bizarrely gigantic labrador) to comedy and suffering facial peels.

Since bursting onto the UK stand-up comedy scene a few years ago she has charmed and beguiled audiences with her sharp tongue, accurate home truths and totally unique life experience.  It’s no surprise then that she was nominated for a Best Newcomer gong at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, nor that she’s popping up all over our TV screens on iconic shows such as Have I Got News For You and QI.  She might still be new to stand-up, but she has the savvy and rootedness of a much-loved veteran.  It’s no surprise that she’s already selling out her debut national tour, so best catch her at our wee gaff before she’s selling out huge theatres!

"Acerbic perspective and unapologetic delivery of less politically correct home truths." The List

"Effortlessly manages to be simultaneously waspish yet instantly very likeable." Chortle

Plus support from Archie Maddocks, Alisdair Beckett-King, Ben Pope and Rachel Wheeley

JOSIE LONG

There is no one quite like Josie Long, but thank goodness there is one person that is precisely her.  A comedy prodigy - she won the prestigious So You Think You're Funny competition aged just 17 years old - she has gone on to forge a unique path for herself, creating enormously uplifting stand-up comedy which blooms at the place where idiosyncratic storytelling, activism, politics, homemade props, delicate whimsy and brutal honest meet.  It's unsurprising that her career is filled with awards and nominations - Edinburgh Fringe Best Newcomer winner and 3 nominations for best show - plus a trail of groundbreaking charities established, alternative reality tours and artfully made films.

Josie has performed stand-up around the world and her eighth solo stand-up show, Something Better, started in full swing in September 2016 with a sell-out two weeks at the Soho Theatre in London, followed by a two-week run at the Barrow Street Theatre New York. In 2017, Josie has continued her success on the road, headlining at San Francisco’s Sketchfest and RIOT LA in the US, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival in Australia, and highlighted by a sold-out show at the Duchess Theatre in London’s West End.

"Josie Long builds delightful comedy worlds." The Times

"Strikes an adroit balance between fun, moral outrage and indignant mockery of our hideous powers-that be." Guardian

"What great comedy can be. Inspired and inspiring." Metro

Tez Ilyas was born and raised in Blackburn, Lancashire, and is of Pakistani heritage. His reputation for delivering smart, sharp and powerfully satirical content has fast established him as one of the most exciting rising stars in British Comedy.

In 2015 Ilyas achieved phenomenal success with his debut stand up hour TEZ Talks. A sell out run at the Soho Theatre and his own Radio 4 series based on the show followed, with a second series quickly being recommissioned.  In 2016, his highly anticipated follow up show Made in Britain went on to sell out every single performance (including extra shows) at the Edinburgh Fringe and gained spectacular critical acclaim, with a smash hit nationwide tour in 2017. His third show Teztify once again delivered a spectacularly powerful, provocative and brilliantly funny hour of topical stand up, delivering to packed out audiences night after night.

Tez has since appeared on Live at the Apollo, The Last Leg, Mock the Week, Live From the BBC, Man Like Mobeen, Live from the Comedy Store, Kevin Hart’s Live from Montreal, The Now Show and many more.  His 2018 Ted Talk Made in Britain – which explored Tez being both British and Muslim, was so successful that it began trending on Twitter
